NFT Film Calladita Wins At Sundance

Calladita, an NFT-funded film, has won the a new prize at Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Miguel Faus, the movie explores the themes of class differences and injustice from a nuanced perspective and was financed using NFTs. As a Film3 production, Calladita uses decentralized technologies to support independent artists. The win of the Andrews/Bernard Award, established by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh and Decentralized Pictures with a $300,000 commitment for notable English-language films and shorts, is a major accomplishment for Faus and his team. Calladita is the first film to win the award. According to Cryptotimes, Steven Soderbergh went on to describe the value of film3 as an enabler of independent film making.

We sat down with Miguel Faus last march to learn more about the project. You can read the interview here.

What is Film3?

Film3 the new idea of decoupling NFTs from the “3” narrative. We’ve seen Web3, GameFi, and now Film3 as a type of movie production that utilizes decentralized technologies to empower independent filmmakers. By utilizing blockchain, filmmakers can create, finance, and produce movies in a new way, without being dependent on traditional film companies and studios. This allows for a more direct relationship between filmmakers and audiences and provides new options for financing and distribution. Film3 offers a decentralized platform for the creation, distribution, and monetization of independent film, giving filmmakers more control over their work and a new way to reach audiences.

When asked about what made the project unique, he stated:

We are only the second fiction feature film ever funded with NFTs, and the first European project to do so. It’s also quite unique that the feature comes from an award winning short film that is a proof of concept and has allowed us to create an amazing collection of 1/1 NFTs in order to fundraise the movie, giving our community the chance to both be a part of the journey of making the movie, and also collect a unique and super special NFT.
