Refik Anadol x MOMA first solo U.S. museum exhibit

MoMA has revealed details of an upcoming exhibition showcasing the work of media artist, Refik Anadol, titled Refik Anadol – Unsupervised. It opens on November 19th, 2022 and runs until March 5, 2023.

Anadol’s new exhibit at MoMA will not be his first solo museum show in the U.S., but it will be his first time working with the institution. He has previously exhibited at the Tate Britain, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid.

The exhibition will include images created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. These AI-generated images will change depending on the environment they’re viewed in. For example, if the viewer moves closer to an image, the AI algorithm will adjust accordingly.

Anadol’s new works will use AI to interpret more than 200 year’s worth of art from MoMA’s collection. Located on the MoMA’s ground level, a 24×24-feet media walls will constantly generate new forms grounded in an intersection between techology, creativity, and modern arts.

“Anadol” means “dream” in Turkish. The artist uses computer programs to create images from his imagination. He has created some amazing works using these techniques.

As the algorithm “walk[s]” through the museum’s collection, it continually generates new images, reinterpreting the past, and imagining the future.

The exhibition is the latest step in Anadol’s artistic journey. In May, his NFT of the Casabatllo sold for $1.3 million, while in September he debuted a “first of its type” AI art collection to be auctioned at Sotheby’s HongKong.
